Hampshire based rocky 4 piece The 109s

The 109s have taken everything good about Zeppelin, Sabbath, Royal Blood, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, MC5, The Stooges, Soundgarden and The Black Keys, and distilled from it a 100-percent-proof moonshine-mash that is all their own – a heady brew that kicks like a mule, burns like a mother, but has everyone asking for seconds . . .

The fantastic power of the band’s music is led by vocalist Damian Shelley’s strong but nuanced delivery and impressive vocal harmonies, while lead guitarist, Matty Pritchard’s short, high-octane solos reference everyone from Jimmy Pageto J. Mascis.

Of course, none of this would be real rock if there wasn’t a stunning rhythm section (Pete Smith, bass, and Steve Collings, drums) who deliver the precision-power and flair of legendary pairings such as John Bonham and John Paul Jones, or Keith Moon andJohn Entwistle.

The band’s song arrangements are always original and surprising, wringing every droplet of dynamism and groove from a single riff, before strutting seamlessly through a flurry of exciting changes that are strung together with the delicacy of dewdrops on a cobweb.

High octane blues rock – very much my thing! Now I just need to see you do it live some time!” – Award winning crime novelist, Ian Rankin

A multi-talented artist, lead guitarist, Matty Pritchard, is also an author and member of the UK Crime Writers Association. He has published three novels in the UK to date – Scarecrow, Broken Arrow and Werewolf –  under the name Matthew Pritchard, and was nominated for the CWA’s Gold Dagger Award.

The 109s’ eponymous debut album is due out October 5th

REVIEW: BULL FUNK ZOO

Dubai born and based rock artist Bull Funk Zoo is really pushing the boundaries of rock with his unique second album ‘Dangerous Radio’ which is set for release mid September.  The album takes the listener on a journey through the themes of sex, rock, blues and funk. The sound running throughout the whole album is reminiscent of The Red Hot Chilli Peppers and The Sex Pistols but is also distinctly recognisable as Assaad’s sound.

He has already formed collabs with Gorillaz and Wu Tan Clan but this new musical venture has allowed Assaad to go solo producing and performing the whole album entirely by himself.

All the tracks are filled with funky guitar riffs and strong powerful vocals contrasted with interesting melodies. Overall, a nice rock inspired album with some tracks that I will add to my playlists. Check out Bull Funk Zoo’s upcoming tour dates too, I am sure his most recent album will heavily feature in his set list.

Andrea Di Giovanni returns with new emotionally-driven pop single ‘Hold Me Once More’ and new EP Soultrip

21-year-old Italian-born pop singer Andrea Di Giovanni delivers another fun and equally heart-wrenching single straight off his new EP Soultrip.

Listen to the track:

As the singer explains: ‘Hold Me Once More’ is the first song I ever wrote in English, 3 years ago. It talks about the relationship between me and my dad during my childhood and the lack of love and communication I perceived within it.

In the lyrics of this tune I am quite straight forward, telling him what I have been through, which I never had the courage to do in person.

The single follows Andrea’s previous emotive electro-pop single ‘I’ll Take Care of Myself’.

Both tracks will appear on the singer’s new EP Soultrip, which tackles an array of personal topics such as Andrea’s relationship with his father, exploring his bisexuality, as well as overcoming his experiences with vitiligo.

As the title explains’ states Andrea, ‘it’s a journey into the deepest corners of my soul, starting with the relationship with my dad, going into the very first time I fell in love with a guy, to my first experience in a gay relationship to the relationship with my ex best friend (actual girlfriend now). The progression of concepts for the EP is: absence, lust, apathy, awareness and resolution.

Mancunian genre-meddlers Liam Browne & The Love release bouncy indie anthem ‘Baby Grow’ (and new album Forget & Remember)

The music is raw and unpretentious, juxtaposed with the vocals, which have an idiosyncratic style and are consistently engaging, while the lyrics are intriguing and intelligent.”

‘Liam is a born front man who always looks like he’s playing to a stadium’

Rowetta of the Happy Mondays

Having found themselves a cult following in Manchester, unsigned genre-meddling indie act Liam Browne & The Love seem destined to take on the rest of the country with their eclectic and nutty Northern-rooted sound.

Straight off their upcoming album Forget & Remember, their brand new single ‘Baby Grow’ is an upbeat and bouncy indie rock anthem that provides a small taster of the band’s large sonic scope. A music video is set to drop soon.

Stream ‘Baby Grow’ on Soundcloud here:

Delivered with a raw and untamed Mancunian attitude, the album Forget & Remember is a crazy cocktail of lad rock, hip hop, folk and electronica all recorded in guitarist James Fraser’s garage (later mixed at Noise Boy Studios). Rowetta of the legendary Happy Mondays appears on two of the record’s tracks.

Watch music video for ‘Confused’ (ft. Rowetta of The Happy Mondays) here:

The group have an unusual origin story – frontman Liam was in the Amazon and a Shaman convinced him to sing for the first time initiating his aspirations as a vocalist and a songwriter. He met fellow member James at a Shamanic workshop the following year and from that point on they started making music together.

On top of his work as a musician, Liam Browne has starred in a number of cult movies including acclaimed raunchy Brit flick brilliantlove. He is close to Stereophonics lead singer Kelly Jones after taking the lead role in his music videos for ‘Violins and Tambourines’ and ‘In the Moment’.

I naively feel like Scorsese finding his De Niro

– Kelly Jones of Stereophonics, whilst directing Liam Browne in one of his music videos

Adding to his eventful background, Liam was involved in a near-fatal accident that almost prevented the band from ever coming to be. Whilst jacking his car up by the side of the M60, the vehicle dropped on top of him, leaving him trapped beneath it for two hours. It was only due to breathing techniques learnt though yoga that he was able to conserve oxygen and survive.

Forget & Remember is out 2nd October. Beck, Badly Drawn Boy, Kelly Jones and Rowetta all already own copies of the unreleased album.

The single ‘Baby Grow’ is out 2nd September

I can feel your power from Ian Martyn

For lovers of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Fleetwood Mac  Ian Martyn’s expressive and greatly inspiring new single ‘I Can Feel Your Power’ epitomises the  support and comfort that art can bring to people especially at their darkest times in life. In Ian’s case it’s living with the earth shattering experience of losing both his wife and mother in the space of just 5 months.

As well as using his dreams to inspire his lyrics (I Can Feel Your Power) he visited a Tibetan monastery in Scotland to study Buddhism in order to help him manage the difficulties of his new life. At the monastery he had the unusual experience of meeting a soul-mate and felt a severe case of’ Déjà Vu’.

Ian Martyn’s unique approach to writing his music is that of writing the lyrics as a wholly meaningful and poetic piece of literature, so beautiful that the words alone just scream out for music. Ian’s music aids the healing process of any kind of personal strife or bereavement and is the perfect soundtrack to finding a new directions in life.

Alongside his emotional life journey Ian features international artists for his music artwork. Some artists worthy of note are Jack Vettriano (on ‘Why Don’t You Tell Me’), Leonid Afremov and Sera Knight (on ‘You Are The One’), Laurie Hamilton, Adam Scott Miller, Delmary and (on ‘I Can Feel Your Power’) Daniel Eskridge (on ‘Dance With Spirits’), Rassouili and Josephine Wall (on ‘Déjà Vu’).

They have all said they are delighted and honoured to have a share in Ian’s journey and adding an extra dimension to Ian’s enlightening music.

The multi instrumentalist has toured the UK and Ireland with The Shades and in early 2016 he began recording a collection of songs inspired by the music he adores. The singer-songwriter takes a completely DIY approach, self recording and mixing everything in his home studio. Every instrument on the EP was performed by him allowing him make music that he truly loves.

The retro sounding EP has strong nods towards classic artists such as Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis. The EP is out on 12th August.
